Why Staying Abroad No Longer Means Moving Forward
The hidden difference between geographic mobility and career compounding.
I used to treat an overseas assignment as evidence that my career was moving forward.
The assumption was understandable: the pay was higher, the responsibility looked larger, and the experience was unusual.
The belief began to fail
An experience compounds only when it adds new capability, relationships, judgment, or choice. Repeating the same responsibility in a different country may still be valuable, but it is no longer automatically growth.
The new test
I now ask a different question: what future option does this role create that I would not otherwise have?
This judgment may change again if the role gains real exposure to new products, customers, AI transformation, or cross-border decision making. A judgment should include the conditions under which it expires.
